Stress Management

"Trust yourself. You have survived a lot, and you will survive whatever is coming."

— Robert Tew

Stress is a natural experience in all human life and exists in various forms. The first and most common type of stress is called short-term stress and it is temporary in duration. It is the body's natural reaction that helps you focus during high-stakes decision dependant moments. This type of stress is necessary for healthy daily functioning.

Long-term (chronic) stress on the other hand is destabilising as it is maladaptive in nature. It is often characterised by the stress response exceeding its initial trigger and persisting longer than it typically should. By using tried and tested counselling techniques counsellors equip you with the necessary skills that enable you to identify your stress inducing triggers, alter negative thoughts, develop healthy coping skills and practice self-care. This helps to improve the management of emotions and overall well-being, lowering stress symptoms and building resilience.

Self-Esteem and Confidence

"Self-worth cannot be verified by others. You are worthy because you say it is so."

— Wayne Dyer

Self-esteem and confidence play a crucial role in our lives as not only do they form the foundation of our mental health but they also impact the level of our initiative and ambition, dictate our resilience and influence our overall life satisfaction.

Self-esteem affects how we manage the challenges we encounter, it affects how we build and maintain relationships, and it influences our ability to achieve goals by shaping belief in our own worth and capabilities. Counselling helps improves self-esteem and confidence by means of providing a safe space so that you are enabled to identify and challenge negative automatic thinking patterns and understand the original causes of low self-worth which often can be traced back to past experiences. Counselling also guides you to a point where you are able to develop practical tools that boost self-compassion, which reshapes your self-perception resulting in you building confidence and embodying a healthier self-image.

Personal Growth

"Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant."

— Robert Louis Stevenson

Counselling is often thought of as an option for moments when a person is experiencing challenges in their lives however it is equally important to be aware that counselling can also be used as a tool to improve one's life even in times when a person is not experiencing a crisis.

Counselling gives you the opportunity to explore the things that you truly value; it provides you with the resources you need to elevate your skillset, improve on the things you already excelled at and acquire new strengths that you can apply in various parts of your life.

Emotional Challenges

"Instead of resisting any emotion, the best way to dispel it is to enter it fully, embrace it and see through your resistance."

— Deepak Chopra

Emotional challenges exist in a variety of forms, ranging from anger, sadness, persistent worrying, and emotional dysregulation. These difficult emotions can be painful to experience and hard to express, especially when there is insufficient support.

Counselling is there to offer a safe, structured and non-judgmental environment that allows for you to process these difficult emotions. It provides both short term relief as well as long term tools that will help with improved mood regulation.

Major Life Events

"We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails."

— Bertha Calloway

Major life changes can be immensely destabilising and unsettling, regardless of whether they were expected or not. What's of utmost importance is you knowing that you do not need to face these major life changes alone.

One shouldn't feel compelled to face these difficult moments alone at the expense of their wellbeing. Seeking support during these challenging times is not a sign of weakness. Support from a counsellor provides you with a safe space to offload the weight on your shoulders and express the intense emotions you're experiencing. A counsellor helps normalise these feelings so that you do not feel alienated during this transitional period in your life. With the guidance of a counsellor you are also able to develop healthy coping mechanisms that help you manage the ongoing changes.
